Malaysia GP: Hamilton overcomes issues to top FP2

Lewis Hamilton facing engine troubles and no telemetry still managed to be fastest in the second Friday practice after only 16 laps, ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and teammate Nico Rosberg.

This session had a very hot weather, with track temperature rising to egg-boiling temperatures of 60C, and a tricky turn 11, where Roberto Merhi went off for Manor and brought out a red flag. Sebastian Vettel would also go off in the same corner, though the Ferrari man rejoined the track.

Williams Racing got into a bit of trouble just before the session, receiving a 10,000 euro fine for using an extra tyre set after the permitted time in Felipe Massa's car. Stewards decided the team did not gain any competitive advantage and the fine was purely economical.

A strange and interesting highlight today was also the bodyworks coming off, as were seen in Pastor Maldonado's Lotus or Valtteri Bottas' Williams. The heat again may be the cause of it all.

When looking at the longer run times, it seemed Ferrari, and Raikkonen in particular, had very impressive times - can it be enough to be a threat to Mercedes though?

The top ten in the second practice session:
1. Hamilton — 1:39.790
