Rosberg beats Hamilton in Mexico
Vamos Nico! Nico Rosberg rebounded from the USGP to win Mexico’s first race in 23 years from team mate Lewis Hamilton in a super drive. Valtteri Bottas took third for Williams, and Ferrari had their first double DNF in 9 years.
"It feels amazing. Great race, great battle with Lewis and I am really, really happy to get the win," said Rosberg to Nigel Mansell in the podium. "This is the best podium of the year, so what a place to do it.
"Absolutely awesome, muchas gracias."
Rosberg had the pace all weekend long and dominated from practice to qualifying to the race. He held off Hamilton and was even further ensured when Sebastian Vettel’s crash with Daniel Ricciardo saw the Ferrari man quickly lose places through the grid with a puncture on the first lap.
Vettel would make a mistake in the latter part of the race which triggered a safety car — on lap 53 of 71 — and had the packed close together again. Rosberg again took off from Hamilton and drove beautifully towards a well deserved win.
Hamilton had a bit of a disagreement with the team regarding the second round of pit-stops, but all was forgotten on the podium and he congratulated Nico on a 'fantastic race'. The recently crowned champion also had positive words for the crowd.
"It's just been fantastic to be here, I've never seen a crowd like this - it's like a football match. The fans have been amazing, never seen anything like this!"
During the race, it was podium up for grabs between Red Bull’s and Williams’, as Ferrari had a double DNF in a 'character building' race. While Vettel finished against the wall, a recovering Kimi Raikkonen who was targeting P4 after starting from 20th collided with Valtteri Bottas again, and was out of the race. Bottas though, went on to his second podium of the season in third place.
Bottas thanked the team for a 'mega job' after the race, and said it was a shame to have another contact with Kimi, but that's racing.
Meanwhile the biggest cheers were saved for home hero Sergio Perez, who finished in eighth for Force India. A truly incredible audience and ambiance.
